Aladdin eToken and Windows 7

Check comments below for a solution to this issue! Thanks to Daniel Verbruggen!

While testing the Aladdin eToken (USB form Factor Smart Card) with PKIClient 5.0 on windows 7, I discovered that the certificates are no longer published into the “Personal Certificate Store”.
Which makes the eToken quite useless for now on Windows 7. I can however logon to the Windows 7 system using the eToken. But for all other purposes like VPN, website authentication etc it cannot be used since Windows 7 does not offer you to pick an certificate to authenticate with.
The Smart Card device forwarding still works, over RDP and also within XP Mode on Windows 7.

I dropped Aladdin an email and asked them for timelines and Windows 7 support, but until now, nothing but silence. I will update this post when I know more. In the meanwhile if you’ve got a workaround… please drop a comment.

My first guess would be the “Certificate Propogation service” isn’t started. Default this service isn’t started in Windows 7 but needed to display certificates in Personal store.

I’m with Igor, the Certificate propagation service was already started on win7 RTM, yet etoken client still fails to work.

I tried the same, but the eToken client fails to work, too. A new PKI client (v 5.1 SP1) will be released in january 2010, the support-team told me. Can´t wait so long because Email-signing doesn’t work, too.

I have only tested on Win 7 RC1 (build 7100). Will test on Win 7 RTM in the near future, i’ll drop the results here.

According to Aladdin, Win7 should be supported with PKI Client 5.1 SP1 which is scheduled for 01/2010

Just a little update to that topic.

Until PKIClient 5.1 SP1 is released you might want to try PKIClient v5.1 instead of v5.0. I’m currently installing W7 RTM to try just that.

@Frank, I have the same problem with obtaining the driver. I’ve purchased my eToken-Pro fair and square around the year 2002 through a consulting company i worked for at the time. i no longer work there and the company was “eaten” by a bigger one, changed hands, people came and went, you know how it works.
now Aladdin wants me to go and find the receipt?! I mean, their licensing system as it is today didn’t even exist back then. i have never imagined i will have to provide proof of authenticity while I’m holding the product (hardware!) in my hand. so if anyone could help me out here with a driver for W7 I’ll be very thankful – shifter80@gmail.com
